After Scott Pye’s Saturday race win at Silverstone in the Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain it was the turn of Scott Malvern and Josh Hill to share the victory spoils at the home of British motor sport on Sunday. Malvern’s win in the first of the day’s races was his first since Oulton Park in April, while Hill’s victory in the finale was his second of the season also.

Round 14
Championship leader Malvern ended his 12-race victory drought when the Cliff Dempsey Racing Ray pilot snatched the lead of the 14th round of the Ford-backed championship on the opening lap and hung on in front throughout an extended safety car period to claim a hard-earned win.

Malvern seized his chance when pole-sitter Pye’s Jamun Racing Mygale failed to get cleanly away, which allowed Pye’s team-mate Hill to take the early advantage. Pye fought back to lead out of Club corner but by the time the train of Formula Fordsters arrived at Bridge corner it was Malvern out in front.

Scott Malvern and Scott Pye, respectively first and second overall in the Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain, have been awarded ‘Rising Star’ status by the British Racing Drivers Club.

The honours were confirmed today at the BRDC’s home circuit of Silverstone, venue for round 13 of the championship. ‘Scouted’ from trackside, the BRDC Rising Stars are the club’s junior members and represent it in national championships. Lewis Hamilton is one of the scheme’s success stories.

Scott Malvern is delighted to have been recognised: “I’m over the moon. It’s something I’ve always thought would be a great boost to my career and I feel honoured to have been selected.”

Added Scott Pye: “It’s a fantastic honour and I’m going to do my best to live up to the accolade.”

With seven different winners in the first 12 rounds, the Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain couldn’t be less predictable as the series heads towards the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit for next weekend’s (14/15 August) triple helping of race action.

The man on top of the championship is still Scott Malvern, whose Cliff Dempsey Racing Ray took over in front after winning the second round at Oulton Park in April. And he’s 37 points ahead still, even though the Essex driver hasn’t won a race since.

Scott Pye is the man with designs on catching the championship leader and, unless Malvern rediscovers the art of winning, he stands every chance of doing so before the end of the year. Australian Pye is hoping to be Jamun Racing’s sixth consecutive Formula Ford Champion and his Mygale has already won six races.

Last month at Rockingham it was young Cypriot charger Tio Ellinas who was on the best form. Ex-karter Tio claimed his maiden race car victory in round 11 for Northants-based team JTR, and then followed that with another resounding Rockingham victory in his Mygale. Tio is now just 16 points behind his team-mate Daniel Cammish and, if he continues on that sort of form, will be able to target a top-three championship placing at the very least.

Young racing hopefuls looking to follow in the wheeltracks of World Champion Jenson Button were in action yesterday (Sunday), bidding to win their first Formula Ford drives.
They were taking part in the Kartmasters tournament at the PF International kart circuit in Lincolnshire, where the top three in the KF2 division would each be rewarded with the promise of a test drive in a top chassis from the Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain.

Jordan Chamberlain, Mark Litchfield and Tom Grice were the Kartmasters 1-2-3 and will take their prize drives at the end-of-season Formula Ford ‘sampler day’.
“I am sure that Jordan, Mark and Tom will have a fantastic time when they get to sample a Formula Ford for the first time,” said championship manager Penny Mattocks. “All three drove brilliantly in the competition and I am sure have long and successful motorsport careers ahead of them.”

Kartmasters, which is organised by the Trent Valley Kart Club, celebrated its 15th anniversary this year.

Scott Pye enjoyed a near-perfect weekend at Castle Combe, Jamun Racing’s Australian title hopeful leading from pole to chequered flag in both of the Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain races to record his fifth and six wins of the season.

Pye bounces back into championship second as a result of his latest victories, with championship leader Scott Malvern maintaining his 43-point advantage thanks to a brace of podium finishes.

In the Scholarship class there were twin wins for Raysport driver Tristan Mingay, with Luke Williams losing and then regaining the class points lead.

Round 9
Pye’s fifth win of the season looked in a certain amount of doubt as the lights flashed to start round nine, for the pole-sitter lit up his Mygale’s rear wheels just a little too enthusiastically, provoking massive wheelspin. Fortunately for Scott, those around him – his team-mates Josh Hill and Emil Bernstorff, plus Daniel Cammish in the JTR Mygale – failed to profit from his error, with Hill and Cammish slotting in behind the Australian on the run through Folly and up Avon Rise. Danish driver Bernstorff suffered a very poor start, dropping back to 10th on the opening lap.

Right in Cammish’s wheeltracks for fourth was championship leader Scott Malvern, whose opening lap more than compensated for fuel pick-up problems in qualifying which left the Cliff Dempsey Racing Ray pilot seventh on the grid.

Mikhail Goikhberg rejoined the team and lead Saturday until a spin dropped him to 3rd and lead the early laps on Sunday before a missed shift saw him drop to 3rd, he was still looking good for the win as he Rzadzinski and Jantzi battled on, but a broken driveshaft put an end to his day on lap 9.

Scott Pye recovering from his qualifying dramas at Zandvoort. Image by Jakob Ebrey Photography

After the drama of the Zandvoort rounds of the Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain, which provided two debutant race winners, the series swings into Wiltshire next weekend (19/20 Jun) for a double-header at Castle Combe.
With championship leader Scott Malvern’s advantage now stretched out to 43 points, the Jamun Racing team and its front-running driver, Australian Scott Pye, are hoping for an improvement in their fortunes at Combe.

For despite winning four of the season’s eight races, 20-year-old Pye has slipped to third in the championship standings, largely due to an electrical problem at Zandvoort last weekend. “The ignition switch, which costs around £3, failed on my first flying lap,” said a rueful Scott. To add insult to injury, he endured further problems this week in testing at Castle Combe.

“We’ve just finished testing there; we were going really well but unfortunately on my new-tyre run I tangled with another car – someone wasn’t checking their mirrors and turned in on me and took me out – so I missed the last three sessions of the day. It was going really well up to that point, though, and I’m feeling quite confident for next weekend and we’re looking to get a couple of poles and race wins.

“The big problem for me at the moment is the points deficit; we have the pace but our hopes have taken a bit of a whack. All we can do is to try our best and continue along the lines we have been and try to win some more races. I hope our luck turns around a little bit.”
Cliff Dempsey Racing driver Malvern has led the championship since round two at Oulton Park, even though the Essex racer’s Scholar-engined Ray has won only one race. Crucially the 21-year-old has finished off the podium only once and he’s the only driver in the entire field to have scored points in every race.

Dennis Lind celebrates his Zandvoort victory flanked by championship leader Scott Malvern (left) and Daniel Cammish. Image by Jakob Ebrey Photography

In atrocious conditions at Zandvoort today (Sunday), Danish driver Dennis Lind came out on top to win the second Formula Ford race of the weekend and the eighth round of the Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain. In a race that was red-flagged after 10 laps, the Fluid Motorsport Van Diemen pilot claimed victory from Cliff Dempsey Racing’s Scott Malvern, who leaves the Dutch track with a championship lead extended to 43 points.

The Formula Ford race rounded off a great day of racing at the former Grand Prix circuit in the North Sea dunes which attracted a crowd of 43,000. Race day started off in bright sunshine, but rain set in during the afternoon and before the Formula Ford race, the track was really wet. As a result, the clerk of the course decided to allow two formation laps to enable the drivers to familiarize themselves with the changed conditions.

Dan Cammish on his way to victory at Zandvoort. Image by Jakob Ebrey Photography

The JTR team’s newest signing, Daniel Cammish, yesterday (Saturday) scored his maiden victory in the Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain.

An action-packed race at the former Grand Prix circuit of Zandvoort in the Netherlands brought several lead changes, with Cammish crossing the finish line ahead (by just four-tenths of a second) of Jake Cook and Scott Malvern. For the latter, finishing third after a great recovery was enough to extend his championship lead.

With 33 cars, a combination of the regular entrants from the Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain combined with drivers from the Dutch and Danish Formula Ford series, the race at Zandvoort on the support package of the popular and well-promoted Masters event provided some Formula Ford Festival-like atmosphere.
